ACHIEVE In Celebration of National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and
a time for celebration at ACHIEVE.

As the largest, voluntary provider of services for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Broome and Tioga counties, ACHIEVE provides a wide variety of services.

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan declared March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, aiming to bring awareness to the needs and understand the challenges often faced by the more than 7 million Americans living with a developmental disability who strive to be fully included in society.

Today, programs at ACHIEVE assist with job training, career placement, and supported employment environments. ACHIEVE also provides Residential Services for its clients in community, supervised and supportive programs, along with a Respite Service for caregivers. A Guardianship Service, along with a host of other services is also provided.

Its core facility-based vocational and long-term sheltered employment program, Country Valley Industries, provides a variety of training and jobs through subcontracts with business and industry and is certified by the New York State Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), State and County Social Services Departments, and the United States Department of Labor.

ACHIEVE was founded in 1952 by 10 local families who went door-to-door to ask for support to build a local resource for their children. Today, ACHIEVE supports over 1,800 clients and their families. New expansions to its Cutler Pond, Binghamton, NY offices and within a new location at 47 Riverside Drive, Johnson City, NY – will provide modernization of support services.
