MOTORISTS REMINDED: STEER CLEAR OF EMERGENCY RESPONDERS Aggressive Drivers Beware

MONTOURSVILLE - Now through the end of September, PennDOT and state and local law enforcement officials are emphasizing the importance of the statewide 'Steer Clear Law.' This law requires motorists to move to a lane that is not adjacent to the scene of a police stop or an emergency response. If that is not possible, then motorists must move over as far as safely possible and slow down, next to the scene of an emergency response, police stop or tow truck picking up an abandoned vehicle.
The law went into effect in Pennsylvania in 2006 and applies anytime an emergency vehicle has its lights flashing or where road crews have posted flares and signs to warn motorists. Failure to obey this law can result in a fine of up to $250.
The emphasis on the 'Steer Clear Law' is in conjunction with the third wave of PennDOT's Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project that runs from July 1 through September 30. The theme for this wave focuses on safe passing, sharing the road when passing trucks, bicycles and motorcycles, as well as a review of the 'Steer Clear Law.'
Nearly 400 municipal police departments, as well as the Pennsylvania State Police, are participating in this wave. In north central Pennsylvania, more than 22 municipal police departments are participating. Local police departments are: Athens Township and Troy (Bradford County), Berwick, Bloomsburg, Hemlock Township, Scott Township and South Centre Township (Columbia County), Duboistown, Montoursville, Muncy Township, Old Lycoming Township, South Williamsport and Williamsport (Lycoming County), Danville and Mahoning Township (Montour County), Coal Township, Milton, Mount Carmel Township, Point Township, Shamokin, and Sunbury (Northumberland County), and Lewisburg (Union County). The Pennsylvania State Police is taking part in this program in Lycoming, Northumberland, Snyder, and Tioga counties.
