ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL
TO BE BLESSED IN WHITNEY POINT AND MARATHON
Whitney Point, New York – October 4, 2009
The Bible is very clear that there will be animals in heaven and what better place to start this journey than to be blessed at the annual Blessings of the Animals service on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Grace Episcopal Church in Whitney Point at 9:00 a.m. or at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Marathon at 10:30 a.m. Both services will collect donations for the Broome County Humane Society, dedicated to ending cruelty to all animals.
“Isaiah speaks of the wolf and the lamb feeding together in heaven. Although I have yet to bless a wolf, I have blessed lambs – as well as horses, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, snakes and even a cranky old goat,” said Father Liz Groskoph. “This year, we anticipate welcoming Mac of Whitney Point, Medgar of Willet and the quintessential Spot of Cincinnatus.”
According to Mary Margaret and Edgar Deyoe, longtime Whitney Point residents, “The communities of Whitney Point and Marathon look forward to this fun event held every October. We have seen small children with their prized pet fish in a bowl as well as seasoned farmers with a horse in a trailer.”
St. John’s Church, founded in 1910 and Grace Church, founded in 1869 are small parishes dedicated to serving the rural area between Cortland and the Southern Tier. Both churches have devoted congregations who provide those who live nearby with social and religious support.
