Binghamton University’s History Department will host the 2013 Harvey and Elizabeth Prior Shriber Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 15, in Lecture Hall 8, on campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Guest speaker Eric Foner, Dewitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, will discuss his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery.” Foner will talk about the evolution of Lincoln’s views regarding slavery and race in America, indicating how his views changed and whether he should be considered the Great Emancipator.

Foner is considered one of the country’s most prominent historians. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, his books have won the Bancroft Prize and the Lincoln Prize, among other awards. Professor Foner’s publications have concentrated on the intersections of intellectual, political and social history, and the history of race relations in America.

Foner has written other well-known works, including “Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men: The Ideology of the Republican Party Before the Civil War,” “Tom Paine and Revolutionary America,” “The Story of American Freedom,” and “Who Owns History? Rethinking the Past in a Changing World.”
