Congressman Arcuri honors Pathfinder Village
Recognizes village for long-term service to the Down Syndrome Community

Edmeston, New York, October 19, 2009 ... Congressman Michael A. Arcuri, D-Utica, presented Pathfinder Village with a certificate of recognition last week as part of the Village’s ongoing celebration of October as National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. During an assembly at the Village’s school, Mr. Arcuri’s aide, Charles Greco, spoke on the exciting work that happens each day at the world’s only known community that is dedicated to children and adults who have Down syndrome.

“The Congressman and other members of Congress recognize Pathfinder Village for the great work it has done in enhancing the lives of individuals with Down syndrome. Mr. Arcuri thanks the dedicated staff of the Village for their service and for everything they have done for the betterment of our community,” said Mr. Greco.

In accepting this honor, Pathfinder CEO Paul C. Landers said that the Village is looking forward to working with Congressman Arcuri and his staff to increase the number of educational and vocational opportunities that are available in regional communities for all individuals who have Down syndrome. In addressing the Village School’s student body, which is comprised of both residential and day students from regional school districts, Mr. Landers said that the recognition from the Congressman is shared by everyone who is part of Pathfinder Village.

Following the presentation assembly, Mr. Greco was given a tour of the school’s classrooms, including a demonstration by the students and staff of the school’s new “Smart Board” technology, which integrates computer programs into daily lesson plans.

Founded in 1980, Pathfinder Village is a privately funded, non-profit, residential community for children and adults who have Down syndrome. Additionally, it offers a day school program for students who have disabilities, serving area school districts. Pathfinder Village is licensed by the State of New York and its programs are regulated by the State Department of Education, Department of Health, and the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. It is located on New York State Route 80, two miles east of Edmeston and 15 miles west of Cooperstown.
