Waterman Conservation Education Center and Bob Berg of Thunderbird Atlatl in Candor are offering primitive skills workshops at the Waterman Center, 403 Hilton Road, Apalachin. The workshops and dates offered are: Flintnapping, Nov. 3 and Atlatl Building, Nov. 10.

Flintnapping Workshop (Nov 3): Learn to make simple effective stone tools; scrapers, knives, arrowheads, spear points and other useful tools from stone. Participants will learn about the different types of flint and other materials used to make stone tools. They will learn how to prepare the stone and some basic techniques for working stone. Fee: $20.00

Atlatl Building Workshop (Nov 10): The atlatl class will cover both modern and traditional techniques of atlatl and dart construction, including flint knapping, hafting stone points, cordage making, atlatl lore and coaching on the use of your new atlatl. The growing sport of atlatl throwing is based on an ancient hunting technique. Participants will leave the workshop with a finished atlatl and at least one finished dart and materials for two more darts. Most participants get all three darts finished. The class is “hands on” leading each participant in the creation of a Nanticoke Atlatl and three darts or Kanakadea Atlatl and three darts. Fee: $60
