PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS BRIDGE REPLACMENT ON ROUTE 10, TOWN OF WALTON, DELAWARE COUNTY

Meeting slated for October 28, 2009, in the Town of Walton, Delaware County

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) will hold a public information meeting to discuss the replacement of the bridge carrying State Route 10 over Pines Brook in the town of Walton, Delaware County. The meeting will be held on October 28, 2009, in the O'Neill High School, 47-49 Stockton Avenue, Walton.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the existing conditions and needs with respect to the bridge and to solicit community input on the project. NYSDOT personnel will be on hand starting at 6:30 p.m. and a formal presentation will begin at 7 p.m. The presentation will be followed by a question and comment session.

The current project design would replace the bridge on existing alignment. Four options are being considered to maintain traffic during construction. A temporary on-site detour bridge may be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge. Staged construction, which replaces half of the bridge at a time, while single lane, alternating one-way traffic is maintained on the other half of the bridge using a temporary traffic signal, is also being considered. A third option is an off site detour where traffic would be detoured from State Route 10 onto South River Road at the hamlet of Beerston, and return to State Route 10 in Walton. The detour length is approximately five miles. Emergency access would be provided across the stream. A short term bridge closure is also under consideration. Under this option, the bridge would be closed for a short time while the old bridge is removed and the new bridge is built using accelerated construction methods. Emergency access would be provided across the stream; however, the traveling public would need to seek alternative routes during the time the bridge is closed. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in the summer of 2011 and will last at least one to two construction seasons.

NYSDOT is currently engaged in the preliminary design phase of the project. During preliminary design, NYSDOT develops alternatives that would address the project needs and objectives. The department also investigates the benefits and impacts of various alternatives. The objective of this project is to address the condition of the subject bridge, which is nearing the end of its service life. As part of the design process, the NYSDOT uses public input along with other project information to help develop and refine project alternatives.

Public involvement is essential for the development and delivery of all transportation projects. The Department of Transportation encourages attendance and input as this project moves forward through the project development process.

People who cannot attend this meeting, but have questions, comments, or would like to discuss the projects in further detail, should contact the project manager, Brian Doak, at (607) 721-8225; or by email at bdoak@dot.state.ny.us.
