The Abandoned House Series: Painting Exhibition and Reception

For the month of March, ArtSpace Gallery in Owego is featuring the work of Amy Greenan, a visual artist based in Niagara Falls, NY.

Amy Greenan studied at SUNY Purchase (BFA, 1993) and the University at Buffalo (MFA, 2007). In her current work, "The Abandoned House Series," Greenan experiments with bright colors and comic book-inspired directness. Into these deceptively simple narratives, she investigates and interweaves personal mysteries. Techniques such as direct paint drips and obscured notations result in telling stories that reflect her truth and history. The house paintings have been her primary focus since early 2009; breaking away from figurative work, she turned to an abandoned house to which she'd been attracted. She photographed it, sitting alone in an expansive, overgrown field. Using the photos as a loose guide, she created the first of what ended up becoming a long series of works, featuring "lost architectural souls". She perceives similarities between these houses and the human body and experience; the houses have a history, memories and vulnerability in the same way that people do. A special reception will be held as part of the 3rd Friday ArtWalk on March 15 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Light refreshments and beverages will be served.

The ArtSpace Gallery is located in the Tioga County Council on the Arts building at 179 Front St. in Owego and is open Monday-Friday, 10 AM- 5 PM.
