From Rescue Mission Communications Director:

The Rescue Mission will host an early Thanksgiving dinner for the poor and needy of Binghamton.

The dinner will take place Tuesday, November 24 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 42 Chenango Street, where the Rescue Mission’s homeless outreach team has been based since it began serving Binghamton in 2006.

Several hundred people are expected to receive Thanksgiving dinner, which coincides with the church’s weekly dinner for the needy of the community. Take-out dinners cannot be ordered.

Executive Director Chasz. Parker and other Rescue Mission staff will be on hand to greet the individuals and families as they partake of the traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings and desserts.

The Rescue Mission is preparing the meals at its Syracuse food services kitchen and transporting them to Binghamton where they will be heated and served by about volunteers from the community.

Originating in Syracuse in 1887, the Rescue Mission started serving the Binghamton area in 2003 when it opened a Thrifty Shopper at 1139 Upper Front Street, a store that also provides clothing for needy individuals and families. Its Homeless Intervention Services (HIS) van was put on the road in 2006 and has helped more than 1,000 get meals, housing, jobs and critical services. And a facility that will soon undergo renovations is expected to be open by this time next year to house, feed and equip homeless men at 56-58 Whitney Avenue.
