To age successfully we need to continue our social interactions, build new friendships and keep learning from others. Meet, Greet, & Eat Chat Group gives us the chance to create happy moments, help each other through hard times, and develop new interests. Members share their life experiences, interests and concerns at monthly meetings. This group offers fun, friendship and camaraderie to anyone who is interested.  We will meet at the East Side Senior Center at 11:30 am on the first Wednesday of each month. The center is located in the Fairview United Methodist Church at 254 Robinson Street in Binghamton.  The first chat group meeting is Wednesday, February 1. The lunch menu that day is roast turkey with gravy, mashed sweet potatoes, and chocolate pudding. Reservations are needed for the meal and there is $3 suggested contribution for people age 60 and better or a $4 charge for those under age 60. Call 723-4292 by noon on Monday, January 30, to reserve for lunch.  If you are unable to join the group for lunch, consider just stopping in at 11:30 to meet the group. All are welcome!

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the average American adult consumes well over 3,300 milligrams of sodium per day. This is much higher than the American Dietetic Association  recommendation of no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day for any person over the age of 40. Consuming excess sodium can have dire consequences on health including increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke (American Heart and Dietetic Association, 2010.)  Broome County Office for Aging invites anyone interested in lowering his or her sodium to “Halt the Salt in your Diet!” Julie Douglass, a dietetic intern from SUNY Oneonta will be speaking about how sodium affects our health, what foods contain sodium and methods of food shopping and cooking to help lower sodium in our diets. There will also be low-salt recipes to taste test and take home.  For more information about this program and other Food and Nutrition services, contact Broome County Office for Aging at 778-2411.
