GHS Federal Credit Union is offering local high-school seniors a chance to win scholarships for college. GHS is participating in the Credit Union Association of New York’s statewide credit union scholarship program, which provides credit union members with $500 or $1,000 scholarships. To be eligible, students must be high-school seniors attending two or four-year accredited educational institutions for the first time in the fall of 2013. The Apalachin Lions Club 26th Annual Scholarship program will award $1500 in scholarships to deserving students from the class of 2013 who live in the 13732, and 13760, 18830 zip codes. This covers Apalachin, CAMPVILLE east to the Broome County line, and Little Meadows, PA. The scholarships are awarded to students who have made outstanding contributions in service to their community and school. One $500 scholarship will be awarded to students who attend Owego Free Academy and Vestal High School. And one $500 scholarship will be awarded to a student who attends either of the following schools: Broome Tioga BOCES, Montrose Junior-Senior High, Seton Catholic Central High School, Ross Corners Christian Academy, and Home Schooling (LEAH). The Naturalists’ Club of Broome County is leading a Porcupine Hike through the Hemlock Grove at Binghamton University’s Nature Preserve today at 9:30 a.m.
The hike will visit several hemlock groves in the Nature Preserve. Highlights often include deer beds, Red Squirrels, Great Horned Owls, Golden-Crowned Kinglets, Fisher tracks, and Porcupines. You will learn how to locate a porcupine and hopefully see some. The hemlock groves are on a fairly steep hillside and if the snow is deep it can be a rigorous walk. Total walk is probably between 1 and 1.5 miles. Wear sturdy boots, dress warmly and bring binoculars. Total trip time between 1 to 2 hours. Park at the upper end of parking lot M and meet at the entrance to the Nature Preserve.
