A small box of tools can be invaluable in case of an automotive emergency or the need for simple repairs. The type of tools you carry don't have to be complicated, but they should be high quality. Quality tools tend to last a lot longer and are less likely to break when you need them most. Your basic tool set should contain a socket and wrench set, flat head and Phillips screwdrivers, pliers, vise grips, and a hammer. Your car may require either metric or standard tools, or a combination of both. The owner's manual should specify which tools are appropriate for your car. Some cars even come with a basic tool set as standard equipment. Other things you may want to consider keeping with you when you drive are a set of jumper cables, a flashlight, some duct tape, a coat hanger, and a battery tester. This is just a basic list of things you may need in case of emergency. If your car's new, you may not need any of these items. If you've got a hundred thousand miles on your car, you may need these things and more.
