Fibromyalgia (fy-broh-my-AL-gee-uh) is a mysterious condition that affects the muscles, and is difficult to diagnose because it has no known cause or cure. The common symptoms are intense muscle pain and fatigue, but many other symptoms are associated with it. Often, the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is made when all other medical conditions are ruled out. Many who suffer from fibromyalgia have found relief through chiropractic care. If you have fibromyalgia, a chiropractor may use adjustments to the neck and spine to ease muscle tension, and he or she may also use heat or electrical stimulation to lessen muscle pain. Moderate exercise and gentle stretching may also be prescribed to boost energy and keep muscles strong and flexible. In some cases, a chiropractor may suggest vitamins or nutritional supplements to help nourish your muscles and reduce pain. Food allergies and chemical sensitivities may also make the symptoms of fibromyalgia worse, so you may be advised to avoid certain foods or eat a special diet. Stress may also aggravate the symptoms of fibromyalgia, so you may want to practice stress relief techniques such as meditation or massage therapy to ease pain and stiffness. Even something as simple as a warm bath may help. Many people with fibromyalgia lead active and satisfying lives with the proper care and treatment. That’s why it’s important to monitor your condition and your progress and let your chiropractor know if symptoms suddenly become worse.
