Orthodontic treatment is the use of devices to move teeth or adjust underlying bone. The type of device used depends on the problems that have to be corrected. Most often, fixed braces are used to straighten teeth. Fixed braces are available in many materials and styles and are worn all the time. Removable braces also straighten teeth and are worn full time, except when they are taken out for cleaning. Functional braces are also removable and are most often used to correct the growth pattern of the jaws. Orthodontic treatment can be effective at any age but is most effective in children whose jaws are still growing. Treatment for adults is more difficult and harder to maintain but still beneficial. In cases of severe tooth crowding, some teeth may have to be extracted to attain a healthy mouth. For extreme cases of jaw and or teeth misalignment, oral surgery may be required to correct problems.
