Shingles come in a variety of materials, styles, grades, and colors. Choosing which type is best for your house depends on the architectural style of your home, the geographical region you live in, the durability required, the cost of materials, and your personal taste. Asphalt shingles are made of cellulose (SELL-u-loce) mats covered with protective layers of asphalt and are coated with mineral granules of various colors. Fiberglass shingles are made of asphalt-saturated fiberglass and are also coated with colored mineral granules. Fiberglass shingles are lighter in weight and more durable than asphalt shingles, and either may be installed over an old roof. Fiberglass shingles are available with warranties for up to twenty five years, while asphalt shingles may last fifteen to twenty years. Fiberglass shingles also carry a Class A fire rating from Underwriter's Laboratories which means that the roof will withstand severe exposure to fire. Shingles are also available in wood and are machine-cut, creating a smooth finished appearance, but are highly flammable unless treated.
