Hard water, which gets its name from the chalky residue it leaves behind, causes a number of problems in many households. The calcium and magnesium in the water is what's left behind on your dishes, shower stall and appliances. This 'hard' water can also give a dull look to your laundry, create clogged pipes and give drinking water a foul smell. If hard water has become a problem in your home, you may want to invest in a softener or filter, which can eliminate the chalky minerals from the water. There are a couple of installation options. One is to filter only the hot water. This system offers soft water where you need it the most, in the clothes washer and dishwasher. Plus, you'll reduce the amount of hard water in your bath and shower. The other option is to tie the softener or filter into the incoming water trunk before it reaches any fixtures. This method softens, both, the hot and cold water. As always, be sure to contact an experienced plumber to help determine your needs.
