Sometimes persons named in the will are erroneously told that there are no assets to be passed to them. Sometimes persons acting as trustees or under powers of attorney have reduced the size of the estate before the person died. Sometimes they did so in violation of their fiduciary duties – perhaps to benefit themselves or members of their immediate family.
