From Chenango Forks Central School District:
Residents in the Chenango Forks Central School District will vote Feb. 26 on a referendum to purchase three 65-passenger and one 48-passenger school buses. The new buses will replace four aging diesel buses currently in the district’s fleet.
The buses proposed for purchase are liquid propane (LP), which are more fuel efficient than diesel buses and provide a safe alternative fuel choice amidst rising fuel costs. The district currently has two LP buses.
A separate proposition is required to purchase buses because funding is through an installment bond, which is financed over five years. The five-year period corresponds to New York State transportation aid, also spread over five years, which will help the district cover the cost of the buses. After state transportation aid is applied, the net cost for the bus purchase is $75,000 spread over five years, or $15,000 annually.
Voters must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district for at least 30 days. Identification will be required at the polls.
Polls will be open Feb. 26 from noon to 8 p.m. in the Chenango Forks High School auditorium.
