A Lisle woman could spend the rest of her life behind bars for murdering her 2 year old son.
Veronica Taft was sentenced to 25 years to life on Tuesday for beating her son Lyric to death in December of 2010. She was found guilty at trial back in August. Prosecutors say that during his short life, Taft abused Lyric physically and emotionally, smothering him with a pillow for crying, locking him in a dark room and calling him racist names. Judge Joe Cawley called the case as horrific as he's ever seen.
Bruce Bigelow is a family friend whose son would take Lyric fishing. He says 25 years will not bring back the sweet little boy. "He would come to my son's house with bruises. She would always explain it away as a two year old falling down. The boy suffered a terrible life for his two and a half years."
Taft cried and quoted the Bible while reading a statement in which she maintained her innocence and blamed the child's death on her boyfriend. Her attorney plans on appealing the conviction.
