Calvin Coolidge Elementary School held their 5th Annual Poetry Day Thursday.

Students showed off their poetry skills during a morning assembly. 32 kids in first through fifth grades recited poems onstage. There were also pop-up poetry performances by entire classes. Many read works by author Kenn Nesbitt who is visiting the school next week.

Reading teachers Amy Merrill and Ellen Mouillesseaux organized the event. Amy Merrill says, "They seem to really enjoy poetry. We try to make it fun for them and interactive and physical. We try to get them moving and sharing and loving poetry in any way they can. And enjoying reading."

Ellen Mouillesseaux says, "It exposes all kids, regardless of what their reading level is, to the language, the cadence, the rhythm, the rhyme, and everybody's successful."

Two winners will move on to the county wide poetry recitation.
