Local artists and arts organizations are receiving some much needed financial help.

The Broome County Arts Council announced the recipients of this year's United Cultural Fund grants Wednesday. A total of more than $210,000 is being split between 7 organizations, including Tri-Cities Opera, The Roberson Museum and the Binghamton Philharmonic. Another 18 grand is divvied up amongst 14 artists and groups for special projects. That includes money for first-time playwright Barb Slocum of the Town of Fenton to hire actors.

Barb Slocum says, "The grant is a very generous $1000 which I am very grateful and it helps me produce my play "Sandwich," which is about a woman caught between needing to help her aging parents while still having to help her adult children because of the economy."

Nicole Santalucia says, "We received $1,500 for the Binghamton Center for Writers Project: The Binghamton Poetry Project. The project consists of a series of poetry workshops that we teach free to the community."

The poetry workshops are planned for this Spring, Summer and Fall at the Broome County Library in Binghamton, out in Endicott and up in Whitney Point. For more information, go to the Binghamton dot edu website and search Binghamton Center for Writers. Slocum's play "Sandwiched" is scheduled to be staged at EPAC in June.
