Broome Community College hosted its spring convocation on Thursday.
The keynote speaker was Doctor David Callahan. He is the author of "The Cheating Culture: Why More Americans Are Doing Wrong to Get Ahead". Callahan is the co-founder of the independent think tank Demos, which is based in New York City. His organization's goal is to strengthen democracy and expand economic opportunities in the US. Thursday, he addressed cheating in all areas of life and gave suggestions on how to curb the trend.
Callahan says, "Competition is important. We all need to compete, but it's not worth sacrificing your integrity to win. There are more important things in life than winning the competition, whether it's getting the A or winning on the playing field."
Callahan says the pressure to be successful is very great these days. He says that, combined with greater potential rewards, encourages more people to try to cut corners.
