Binghamton University is storm ready.
Wednesday afternoon, it received the distinction from the National Weather Service. BU's Police and Emergency Management Department have procedures in place designed to protect people on campus when there is severe weather. Those safeguards include having a fully staffed communications center, having different ways to receive weather warnings and notify the community.
Dave Nicosia is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Binghamton. Nicosia says, "Storm ready doesn't mean storm proof. We're still going to get storms. This doesn't shield the university from storms, but the Weather Service will continue to work with B.U. on preparedness. This is really the beginning of a partnership."
There are only two other colleges in New York State that have been deemed "Storm Ready." They are SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Albany.
