A Western New York meat processor is recalling over half a million pounds of ground beef believed to be contaminated with E coli bacteria.

Federal health officials have linked the tainted beef to 2 deaths and 26 illnesses in the Northeast.

Locally, the ground beef was sold at Price Chopper supermarkets with expiration dates between September 16th and October 5th.

Consumers are encouraged to check their freezers and return the beef for a full refund.

E coli can cause severe stomach cramps and diarrhea and can sometimes lead to kidney failure.

Processor Fairbank Farms is located in Ashville, near Jamestown, and sells its beef to 8 grocery chains in 7 states.
