More than 800 people learned new ways of connecting with kids on Friday.

Doctor Becky Bailey from Loving Guidance and creator of Conscious Discipline gave a seminar at First Baptist Church of Johnson City. It was aimed at parents, caregivers and people who work with children for a living. Bailey taught the group how to try to bully proof children and schools, while at the same time recognizing that not all aggressive acts are bullying.

Bailey says one of the keys in working with children is to respond to them, not react to their behavior. "If we can all start to be a star, a simple process. Star means smile, take a deep breath and relax before we open our mouth when our buttons are pushed. That simple strategy could change our world."

Part of that strategy includes forming a connection with children instead of just giving them attention. Friday's workshop was sponsored by the Broome County Family Prevention Council and Children and Youth Services.
