Town of Union taxpayers are getting an unpleasant surprise this holiday season.
Turns out they underpaid on their school taxes this year and will need to make up the difference in next year's bill.
According to Town Assessor the new lower rate of savings for the STAR exemption in 2009 were not entered into the computer that determines individual tax bills.
Therefore, taxpayers received the higher exemptions that were in place last year.
The typical shortfall for basic STAR is between 62 and 75 dollars, less for enhanced STAR.
The additional charge will show up as a separate line item on 2010 tax bills.
