Republican Assemblyman Chris Friend says he would like to see New York's new gun law repealed.
He says, at the very least, changes need to be made. Friend, who represents Tioga County, says it should have never been rammed through the legislature. And, he says input from police and other people should have been gathered. He says one of the issues that needs fixing is exempting police officers from some of the arbitrary rules. Friend also says the new restrictions on the size of magazines are aimed more at law-abiding citizens than criminals. "The arbitrary magazine change from 10 down to 7, what's to stop the next government from coming in and dropping it to six or five, or again an arbitrary number. This is not going to make a difference to what a criminal is going to do. You're going after citizens who are legal, law-abiding citizens."
Friend also says the law needs to be crafted to make sure that people who have psychiatric issues aren't discouraged from seeking help from doctors, which he believes will be the case under the new law.
