US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says another way to avoid the spending cuts would be to require anyone making over a million dollars a year to pay a minimum federal tax rate of 30 percent.
That would not allow the wealthy to hide income to avoid taxes. She says she'll work with Republicans this week in the hopes of crafting a deal. Gillibrand says, "If we fail, we'll continue on after that time to find common ground in the next few weeks and months. We have to avert these cuts. They'll hurt our national security long-term if they are put into place permanently."
If budget cuts do happen, they would not hit all at once. Many would be phased in.
