Vestal High School students learned about the horrors of the Holocaust on Tuesday from one of its survivors.
Dina Rosenberg Jacobson grew up in Poland and at age 16 was one of many Jews who were sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War Two. Scholars believe close to 3 million Jews from Poland alone were killed during the war. After being one of the few to survive, Jacobson eventually moved to the US and now lives in Elmira. Even in her 90's, she still makes an effort to visit schools to share her experience.
Jacobson says she wants to make certain the next generation knows what happened. "The old people probably know or not, I don't care. But the young people should know how awful people can be. They shouldn't be that way."
Jacobson has been visiting Vestal for many years now. She says she is the last living Auschwitz survivor in New York State.
