The technology and understanding of the treatment and prevention of diabetes is improving.

Wednesday, Lourdes Hospital held its annual Diabetes Education Fair. It brought together a variety of vendors displaying the latest advances in oral medications, glucose meters and insulin pumps. The fair also provided helpful prevention tips about nutrition, exercise and proper foot care.

Podiatric Surgery Resident Doctor Kurt Relation says diabetics need to examine their feet for sores every day. "You can prevent all of the problems that go along with it such as infections, ulcers, eventually amputation could occur. So, the more we can do to prevent that from happening, the better off the patient is."

Relation stresses that diabetics should not delay in seeing a doctor if they discover problems with their feet. Over 350 patients, staff and community members visited the fair.
