Congratulations to the more than 35 people who became naturalized today.

A ceremony was held in the Supreme Court room of the Broome County Court House in Binghamton.

Cheryl Barker is from Trinidad and Tobago  in the southern Caribbean.

She has been in Greater Binghamton for about ten years and has basically lived her entire life in the US.

She says there are more opportunities here.

Another major difference - the climate in Trinidad is tropical.

Cheryl Barker says, "I want to thank the American Civic Association for helping me all the way to get to this point today. I've been a permanent resident for more than 40 years so I think it was time to become a citizen. I've lived here all my life."

The civic association helped Cheryl with the application and to navigate through the naturalization process.

A moment of silence was also observed for the victims of the tragedy at the ACA last April.
