Students from around our area have been treated to the silly verse of Kenn Nesbitt this week.

The poet was at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary in Binghamton Thursday morning. He read from his 10 books and even helped the kids create their own poem. While he started writing in 1994, his first book didn't come out until 2001. Since then, he's become one of the most recognized authors of poems for children.

Nesbitt says funny rhyming poetry offers kids a big reward for little effort. "Even the most reluctant readers, the kids that will never crack a book, will read books of funny poetry. Because they're fun to read, they're easy to remember, and they tell a joke that makes them laugh, all within a matter of a page or two."

Nesbitt credits his website, poetry4kids.com for increasing his popularity. Some other schools Nesbitt visited were Calvin Coolidge, West Middle and Port Dick Elementary. He will be at Woodrow Wilson Friday.
