Binghamton's City Council President has her sights set on becoming mayor.
Democrat Teri Rennia announced her candidacy at the Grand Royale in downtown. The wife and mother of three says she wants to make sure that Binghamton is a successful community where her children can live and raise their families. Rennia and her husband own three businesses on State Street, including Enviren Services, which they relocated to Binghamton from Vestal in 2000.
Rennia says her experience as a small business owner will help guide her policies when in office. "I think my perspective as a business person really helps a lot. I think I have a clear understanding as to how important economic development is to everything else that we need to do. If we don't have good, successful, quality economic development we're not going to have the resources we need to stabilize taxes, to improve our infrastructure and secure our neighborhoods."
Rennia is the first person to announce her candidacy. She has served on City Council for the past 7 years. Current Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan can't run again because of term limits.
The Chairman of the Broome County Republican Party blasted Rennia's announcement. Dave Hamlin says the City has suffered through eight years of skyrocketing taxes, lost jobs and increased crime while Democrats have been in control. He says Rennia has been part of the problem.
