Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan gave his 8th and final State of the City address Wednesday night.
He briefly outlined a new initiative to bring fresh revenue into the city while saving residents cash as well. The City is about to sign a contract that will pay it $31 a ton for its recyclables. Mayor Ryan says it can save city government money on tipping fees and garbage truck use. And, save homeowners money because they won't have to spend as much on garbage bags if they recycle more. He also reminded the audience about the 3 floods the City has been through. And, talked about past efforts his administration has taken to eliminate blight, make City government more high-tech and contain a variety of costs, including trimming the City's workforce by 70 positions.
Ryan says, "It's nice to see so many friends come and celebrate this occasion. It's a bitter-sweet moment to have to give the last State of the City. But, I think we just try to give a message of what you can do if you bring a lot of new initiatives to City Hall even in difficult times and that's the message we really want to bring."
This is Mayor Ryan's last year because of term limits.
