At a time when good-paying jobs are hard to come by, the federal government is hiring 15 hundred people in the Southern Tier.

At a press conference in Binghamton today, officials from the New York State Labor Department and US Census announced hiring for this year's count.

The 15 hundred positions will be spread across a 9 county region and will pay between 13 and 16 dollars per hour.

Nuria Rodriguez Padro  lost her job as a pharmaceutical rep and took the supervisor test today.

Nuria Rodriguez Padro says, "When I look in the paper, a lot of times there aren't many jobs that I'm particularly interested in, based on my background or because of the pay. This job would be a great opportunity for me to be able to develop my skills and then apply to the federal government officially."

The Census worker test has 28 multiple choice questions.

It will be offered again next Monday February 8th and Wednesday the 17th at the Workforce New York Center on Front Street in Binghamton.

You must make an appointment to take the test by calling the Census regional office in Elmira at 735-5460.

People will start receiving the 2010 Census in the mail toward the end of March.
