Walmart is helping the Food Bank of the Southern Tier hit the road to fight hunger.
The retailer is donating $35,000 to help expand the Mobile Food Pantry Program, which uses converted beverage trucks to deliver fresh produce, dairy products, and other groceries to families in need. The program currently has two trucks that can transport up to 15 thousand pounds of food, enough to feed over 200 families.
Walmart executive Michael Judd says the Food Bank is a good fit for the company's charitable mission. "They do a great job within the community to help service the people in need. It's a very good culture that's shared as well with what Walmart stands for, so we're just proud to be a part of it in what we could do to help them."
Each week, over 11,000 people visit a food pantry or soup kitchen supported by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. In 2011, the Food Bank distributed nearly eight million pounds of food.
