BUFFALO, NY (AP) — Two streets near a downtown Buffalo landmark are closed after a chunk of decorative masonry broke loose from a corner of the aging building and fell 18 stories to the ground.
Authorities say a section of a concrete cornerwork weighing about 200 pounds broke loose from the top of the Statler Towers around 8 p.m. Wednesday and landed on a sidewalk and street. No one was injured.
Police have closed off sections of two streets near the 86-year-old former hotel. The streets are expected to remain closed at least through Thursday morning as city engineers conduct an inspection.
The incident occurred as a local group of investors is poised to purchase the property for $1.3 million. The group's redevelopment plans for the building include hotel rooms, apartments, restaurants and stores.
