GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) — Two off-duty police officers have been involved in shootings in separate incidents on Long Island. One of the shootings resulted in the death of a robbery suspect.
In the first case, Nassau County Police say an off-duty New York City officer was sitting in his vehicle in Elmont at about 1:25 a.m. Tuesday when he was approached by two men. One of the men displayed a knife and attempted a carjacking. Police say the officer fired one shot, hitting the man in the shoulder. He was later arrested at a nearby hospital. The second man fled.
Then shortly after 3 a.m. and 25 miles east in Suffolk County, an off-duty Nassau County officer shot and killed a man attempting to rob him at a Deer Park car wash.
Police have declined to identify either officer, citing department policies.
