Recap: Iona vs. Saint Peters
New Rochelle, NY (Sports Network) - Lamont Jones scored a game-high 24 points as Iona easily handled Saint Peter's, 98-61, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Athletic Center.
Jermel Jenkins added 21 points off the bench for the Gaels (24-6, 15-3 MAAC), hitting on 7-of-13 shots behind the three-point line, while Mike Glover and Sean Armand both added 14 points as the team closed out the regular season with five straight wins and nine in the last 10 outings overall. Scott Machado came up a point shy of a double-double as he issued a game-high 12 assists, matching the entire total by the Peacocks (5-25, 4-14).
Saint Peter's was paced by Darius Conley who tallied 12 points, Yvon Raymond posted 11 off the bench and Lamin Fulton 10 points as the team suffered a seventh consecutive setback.
Both teams shot the ball well from the floor in the first half, the Peacocks hitting on 53.8 percent and Iona 57.7 percent, but thanks to a tremendous 9- of-18 effort behind the three-point line in the frame the Gaels were able to put up a 40-35 lead at the break.
The Gaels put together a spectacular 31-0 run in the second half, boosting their lead to 38 points and never looked back as they cruised to the lopsided home win. The hosts shot 60.5 percent from the floor after intermission and 6- of-15 on the perimeter.
Overall, Iona outscored the visitors from beyond the arc by 30 points and also forced Saint Peter's into 19 turnovers, which the Gaels traded in for 37 points.
The Gaels, already locked in as the top seed for the upcoming MAAC Tournament, get a bye through to the quarterfinal round of the event on Saturday and could again clash with the Peacocks who are the ninth seed and will contend against Marist on Friday night for the right to advance.Game Notes
