Recap: Louisville vs. Seton Hall
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Peyton Siva scored 14 points to lead the seventh-seeded Louisville Cardinals, who held off a late surge from the 10th-seeded Seton Hall Pirates, in a 61-55 win in the second round of the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden.
Kyle Kuric had 13 points and Russ Smith added 11 for Louisville (23-9) which will face off with second-seed Marquette in tomorrow's quarterfinal round. Gorgui Dieng dominated on the inside for the Cardinals ripping down 10 rebounds and swatting six shots.
Jordan Theodore paced Seton Hall (20-12) with 17 points while Herb Pope put up a double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds. Fuquan Edwin added 11 points for the Pirates who now must wait to see if their regular season resume is strong enough to warrant an NCAA Tournament berth.
The first half was not one for offense as Louisville led 23-22 after shooting at an abysmal 27.6 percent from the floor while Seton Hall was no better and managed only six field goals over the first twenty minutes.
Louisville heated up to 55.0 percent shooting in the second half and led by as much as 15 but Seton Hall refused to go down cutting the lead to five points or less five times in the last five and a half minutes.
Theodore scored 12 straight points for the Pirates to bring Seton Hall within four, 59-55, after he nailed a contested three pointer from the left wing with 48 seconds left on the clock. Smith then went 1-for-2 from the line to make it a two-posession game. The Pirates two shots on the next possession clanged off the rim and the Cardinals were able to escape with the win.
Seton Hall held a 42-30 advantage on the boards in the loss. Louisville forced 17 turnovers and clamped down on the perimeter holding the Pirates to a 3-of-19 performance from beyond the arc.Game Notes
