Chad Campbell fired a nine-under 62 Friday to
join Troy Matteson atop the leaderboard after two rounds of the Justin
Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Matteson carded a four-under 67 as he and Campbell finished 36 holes at 13-
under-par 129.
Ryan Moore fired an eight-under 63 to jump into a share of third at minus-12.
He stands alongside Matt Kuchar (64), Bob Heintz (67), Martin Laird (67).
Tom Pernice, Jr. and Spencer Levin shared the first-round lead with Matteson.
Pernice fell into a tie for seventh at 11-under-par 131 after posting a 69
Friday, while Levin shares 14th at minus-nine after an even-par 71 in the
second round.
Campbell got his round going with a birdie on the 10th and came back to birdie
the 14th. He ran off three consecutive birdies from the 15th to make the turn
at nine-under.
The 35-year-old Campbell moved within two of the lead with birdies on three
and six. He closed with a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-five ninth to grab a
share of the 36-hole lead.
"I didn't hit a very good tee shot, I hit it a little left, but luckily it
stopped short of the bunker," Campbell said of his tee shot at 18. "I had a
perfect lie and just a perfect three-wood and made a nice putt. It was
definitely a great way to finish a round."
Matteson started on the back nine at the TPC Summerlin and traded a pair of
birdies and bogeys to start his round.
The 2006 champion opened with a birdie on 10, but bogeyed the 11th. He came
right back with a birdie on the 12th, but he gave that stroke back with a
bogey on 14th.
After five straight pars around the turn, Matteson birdied the second to move
to minus-nine. He collected birdies on the fifth and seventh, then closed with
a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-five ninth.
"I've always liked the fall...I wasn't much of a summer golfer," said
Matteson, who has posted seven top-10 in his last 12 fall series events. "I
didn't play good in the summer. I've somehow managed to play pretty decent in
the fall. It's just a good time of the year for me."
Pernice shares seventh place at 11-under-par 131 with three-time champion Jim
Furyk (67), Scott Piercy (67) and Rickie Fowler (64).
Jeev Milkha Singh (65), Jeff Klauk (67) and Parker McLachlin (65) are tied for
11th at minus-10. Levin shares 14th with Rich Beem (64), Ben Crane (65) and
Hunter Mahan (63) among others.
The cut line fell at four-under-par 138 with 73 players moving on to the
weekend. Among those missing the cut were Steve Flesch, Anthony Kim, Nick
Watney and Rocco Mediate.
Defending champion Marc Turnesa (minus-one) also missed the cut.
